Insurance Counseling
For seniors in South Carolina, the State Health Insurance Program (SHIP) is known as ICARE, Insurance Counseling Assistance and Referral for Elders (ICARE). The ICARE program is federally funded to provide health insurance counseling for Medicare and its many parts. The ICARE program is a free, confidential service through which certified insurance counselors can provide clear, objective information. Some of the many services a certified ICARE counselor can provide include:
- Explanation of Medicare benefits including preventive services
- Instruction on how to read Medicare Summary Notices
- Assistance with Medicare Enrollment for Parts A, B, C and D
- Plan comparison during Medicare Open Enrollment (October 15-December 7)
- Screen for and apply to cost-savings programs such as the Low Income Subsidy (LIS) and the different Medicare Savings Programs
- Facilitate coordination of benefits amongst providers (Medicare, Medicaid, Tricare, etc)
- Identify different types of Medicare and Medicaid Fraud and explain how to report and prevent them

Information and Referral
The Regional Information, Referral and Assistance program (IR&A) provides a one-stop approach to bringing together the services, resources and seniors of Georgetown, Horry and Williamsburg counties. A trained IR&A Specialist works with clients to confidentially assess a situation and make appropriate referrals. When necessary, IR&A staff can advocate on behalf of a client or community.

Respite Care Payment Assistance
The Family Caregiver Assistance Program provides support, information, education and services to family caregivers throughout the Waccamaw Region. The regional caregiver advocate works directly with caregivers to provide them with information and services that help to make their job as caregivers a successful and rewarding experience while relieving many stressors involved in being a full-time caregiver.

Waccamaw Area Agency on Aging (AAA), exists to provide services and resources to seniors and their caregivers in the Waccamaw Region. The AAA offers the support many senior residents need to continue living comfortable, high-quality lives in their own homes for as long as possible.
